After performing a washing ritual with magic water, which contains torn pieces of paper with secret ciphers, Kherou Ngor spends a few hours on the roof of the house of his uncle before he goes to the tournament. There he waits and meditates while the laundry next to him dries in the wind. His uncle is a highly respected Marabout who claims that he can alter destiny by the using magic ciphers. He writes down the ciphers on paper. The paper with the ciphers is then torn and added to the water fort he washing ritual. Marabout is the word for a shaman, a witch doctor or a cleric in Senegal.

  • November 7, 2017 - A ma takes a selfie in front of the Grand Mosque in Touba, where thousands of people gather on. the evening before the Grand Magal Festival starts. Every year, 2-3 million people gather in Touba for this pilgrimage to commemorate Cheikh Amadou Bamba Mbacké (1853-1927), who was the founder of the Sufi order of the Mourids and is worshiped as a saint by the Senegalese. Bamba is interred inside the mosque. After his death, his eldest son Mamadou Moustapha Mbacké was appointed as his successor as the first Caliph General of the Mourid Brotherhood. 1932 he laid the foundation stone for the Great Mosque, which was completed 1963 by Bamba's second son Fallou M'Backé, the second Caliph General of the Mourids.

  • November 4, 2017. Kehrou Ngor looks down at the streets of the village of Ngor in Dakar, standing on the terasse of the house od his family. He is not only a well repsected wrestler, he sometimes also plays the role of a watchman in his village. "There are no thieves in this neighborhood." he says. "Everybody knows the consequences of stealing around here." he ads with a grim smile.

  • In the stadium "Olympique de Ngor" in Dakar a small local wrestling tournament takes place on 04 November 2017. Kherou Ngor is also taking part to support the wrestlers in his neighborhood. Kherou, who has won major matches in Dakar's largest stadium in front of tens of thousands of spectators, has many loyal fans and thus guarantees wrestling match organizers a good crowd. At this point, Kherou does not yet know that this relatively small fight would be his very last as a Senegalese wrestler.

  • November 8, 2017 – Followers of Serigne Cheikh Seye Baye prepare rice in large pots in order to nurish all the pilgrims and guests at the house of their spiritual leader in Touba during the Grand Magal. Cheikh Seye is  is a marabout of the Baye Fall Brotherhood, a clergyman and scholar and the spiritual leader of a Dahira, as smaller religious communities within the Senegalese Sufi brotherhoods are called.

  • November 2013, Father Hermann´s daycare is half-abandoned because the priest is weakened by age and diabetes and reaches his limits. Hermann says that he will have to close the daycare soon because there is no successor and his strength is quickly fading.

  • November 10, 2017.Kherou Ngor is a follower of the Sufi Brotherhood of the Layenes. Before and after his fights Kherou Ngor prays in the grotto where the reborn prophet Muhammad is said to have lived for 20 years. In 1884, Seydina Limamob Laye, the founder of the Layene brotherhood, claimed to be the Mahdi, the reincarnation of the Prophet Muhammad. The Layene believe that this grotto is a place of power.

  • November 8, 2017 –Women of the Ndiaye family prepare food for their noumerous family members and guets during the Grand magal in Touba  while the men gather to pray on the morning of the Grand Magal. The Grand Magal is also the most important family reunion in Sehegal, and women are the center of the family in Senegalese society. They are respected and honored as the educators of the next generation of good Muslims and as the glue that holds together the family. Unlike in the Arab world, women are not considered to be husband‘s property and therefore do not have to wear veils.
